
Dr. Deborah Shulman, Ph.D.
Physiologist/Nutritionist
Dr. Deborah Shulman is a science writer and educator, a nutritionist, a health and fitness consultant, an athletic trainer,
and an endurance athlete. She earned her Ph.D. in physiology (specializing in neuroscience) from Colorado State University
in 1997. She also studied human nutrition at CSU and the University of Maryland. Her articles on sports nutrition and physiology
have been published in national magazines such as Triathlete, Trail Runner, and Marathon and Beyond. She is also a health
and fitness columnist for northern Colorado's largest newspaper, the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
Dr. Shulman's approach to health, fitness, and athletic counseling is based on an extensive knowledge of the scientific
literature as well as long-term personal experience. Her clients range from recreational athletes to Olympic track and field
athletes to non-athletes who want to develop a personalized program to achieve their health and fitness goals. She has worked
successfully with triathletes, cyclists, runners, skiers, swimmers, and motocross racers. She has also helped both athletes
and non-athletes lose weight, recover from chronic fatigue, and control their blood sugar. She is the nutritionist for a
nationally ranked bicycle team, and frequently speaks about nutrition and training to athletic clubs and organizations.
Dr. Shulman has been a competitive athlete since she was six years old. She has competed in a wide range of events, including
swimming, trail running, cross-country skiing, and winter and summer triathlons. She specializes in endurance mountain events,
and has often been a top finisher. She has won the prestigious Vail Hill Climb, the Squaw Valley Hill Climb, the Golden
Leaf Half-Marathon, and others. She has been among the top three finishers in the Pike's Peak Marathon, the Imogene Pass
Marathon, and the Mountain Man Triathlon. Most recently she placed third in the 2002 Half Ironman in Utah.
Dr. Shulman lives with her husband, son, and various other animals in an old house up in the foothills near Ft. Collins,
CO. In her "spare time" she practices yoga, knits, gardens, cooks exotic vegetarian meals, and makes natural cosmetics.
